Natalie and Eriks Macedonian Wedding
Natalie and Erik got married on a beautiful July day. Their wedding celebration mirrored Natalie’s parents wedding. They got married in the same church, with the same traditions and had their reception in the same space with more beautiful Macedonian traditions!
Their day started with Natalie at the salon with many of her bridesmaids and mothers and then coming back to the house were the celebration would begin. Natalie’s mother decorated the front room in their house especially for this occasion. They bought a beautiful mirror for Natalie to get ready in her wedding dress in front of and had a stunning floral arch for everyone to greet Natalie in front of.
Once Natalie was in her dress, family started to arrive where they would dance in the foyer with a live band with authentic music. After an hour of dancing the Kum arrived. This is Natalie and Erik’s good friend that they had chosen to be their future children’s godfather. He was celebrated with dancing in the street and driveway and into Natalie’s parents home. Then the guests went into the basement where there was a table set for family to enjoy a beautiful spread of food before continuing the celebration. Soon after everyone made their way back upstairs to the foyer where the groomsmen and Kum had a tradition of paying the bridesmaids to get access to see Natalie. They paid and pushed their way in to open the doors to Natalie’s room where she greeted all of them with a gift. Once all of the groomsmen had made their way to see her, family lined up to congratulate Natalie and see her. She gave everyone a gift and everyone that made their way to see her had a photo taken in front of the floral arch with her. After all of the family had made their way to see Natalie, everyone made their way onto the lawn to celebrate and dance as Natalie got into her ride to the ceremony. Natalie kicked a cup of water in celebration of overflowing good health and good fortune for their future and danced with everyone before going to the ceremony.
Natalie and Erik had their wedding ceremony at Nativity of the Virgin Mary Macedonian Orthodox Cathedral. Erik waited for Natalie at the front of the aisle where he would see her for the first time on their wedding day. Natalie was walked down the aisle by both her mother and father and made their grand entrance with Natalie’s 17 foot bridal train. Their ceremony was full of traditional events including a crowning and circling the table for their unity in marriage. After the ceremony their friends and family tossed flowers at them outside the church.
Following the ceremony, the wedding party went with the bride and groom to take portraits downtown. We went to the Detroit Public Library. This architecture complimented the timeless and elegant aesthetic for their wedding. The front steps of the library were also complimentary to the long train on Natalie’s dress letting it cascade down the stairs.
Then it was time to party! The party bus took everyone back to the Macedonian Cultural Center where their friends and family were already celebrating and dancing. The band from earlier in the day was also at the reception greeting the guests with live music. Everyone stood as Natalie and Erik had their grand entrance into the reception and as they entered the room they were greeted by fireworks and a smoke machine. It was truly and epic moment! Soon after they made their way into the room, followed by more dancing, Natalie and Eric had the Pig Dance. This is where a pig is carried around the room, going table to table by the wedding party and friends and family dressed for the dance, where friends and family fill the plate with gifts of money.
The night was full of so much beautiful energy and love and so much dancing. It was an evening their friends and family will never forget.
